Steps and Requirements for Becoming a Certified CPE Supervisor
The CPE Supervisor Certification offered by Chaplaincy Pro is designed to prepare experienced Chaplains to mentor and train the next generation of spiritual care providers. This rigorous certification process ensures that Supervisors not only excel in their spiritual care practice but are also equipped with the leadership and educational skills required for supervising Chaplain Professional Education (CPE) programs.
Eligibility Requirements
- Chaplaincy Certification: Applicants must hold a Chaplaincy Pro Chaplain Certification.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of full-time work as a Chaplain after completing 4 units of CPE and obtaining board certification.
- Educational Background: A master’s degree in religious studies, theology, or an equivalent field.
- Submission of Key Documents: Applicants must submit a life story, spiritual growth narrative, reflective papers, and a resume. Additionally, evaluations from previous CPE Supervisors and your final CPE evaluations must be provided.
Training and Supervision Process
The certification process requires candidates to undergo rigorous supervision training under the guidance of an experienced CPE Trainer Supervisor. This involves observing at least one unit (and up to three units) of CPE training under a certified supervisor. Candidates will also take part in supervised teaching and be required to lead at least one CPE unit under observation.
- Observation: A minimum of 1 CPE unit of observation under a CPE Trainer Supervisor.
- Supervised Teaching: Candidates must supervise at least one unit of CPE under the observation of their CPE Trainer.
Document Submission for Certification
- Life Story: A 7-page life narrative that integrates personal, professional, and spiritual experiences that shaped the candidate’s journey toward supervision.
- Video Presentation: A video (60-90 minutes) showcasing the candidate’s supervision of a clinical case, followed by a 7-page reflective paper on the process.
- Personality Papers: A 7-page paper reflecting on the candidate’s personality, behavioral insights, and how these inform their approach to supervising Chaplains.
- Theological and Educational Paper: A 7-page paper that articulates the theological principles and educational theories guiding the candidate’s supervisory style.
Certification Review Process
Once all materials have been submitted, the certification committee will review the documents over a period of 30-60 days. The committee consists of at least three certified CPE Supervisors, and a majority decision (at least two “yes” votes) is required for certification to be awarded. Both written and oral feedback will be provided to the candidate.
Certification Fees
- Initial Application Fee: $277.99 due upon submission of the application and supporting documents.
- Annual Membership Fee: $299.99 to maintain certification and access ongoing professional development.
